Square Three

Wilson Benesch

Taking over where the Square Two left off, the Square Three adds a second Tactic Drive Unit to divide bass and midrange over two dedicated Tactic Drive Units. The result is a rich, detailed and beautifully composed presentation. Every nuance of the music delicate vocal or string — and every detail and micro-dynamic structure of a double bass or drum strike is delivered in a lifelike soundstage.

Unique, innovative design concepts have been distilled in the Square Three, combined they create a highly optimised, floor standing loudspeaker which shares much of its DNA with the Vector loudspeaker in the companies reference line, the Geometry Series.

With two Tactic Drive Units and a bespoke, Wilson Benesch spec, Scanspeak Tweeter the Square Three delivers a frequency range from 35Hz to 24kHz. A minimal crossover design ensures that the bespoke drive technology is free to operate optimally, with a pure signal path between the drivers and the amplifier.

The Square Series II sound is more than the sum of the drive unit technologies it boasts, internally Wilson Benesch has applied design philosophy developed for its reference loudspeaker lines ensuring that both series share a family sound and class leading signal-to-noise ratios.

Technology

SCANSPEAK TWEETER

Familiar from the Odyssey Range and the Wide Bandwidth Collection, the ScanSpeak Tweeter is a 25mm (1”) fabric-dome tweeter. The tweeter has been modified to a Wilson Benesch specification, featuring an improved magnet assembly and no ferrofluid.

TACTIC DRIVER

Having secured a £250,000 DTi SMART Award from the government as part of the development of the Chimera loudspeaker, Wilson Benesch developed its on drive technology in the shape of the highly regarded tactic drive unit. A blisteringly fast and dynamic multi role drive technology manufactured entirely in house alongside the unique Semisphere tweeter. The tactic drive unit at the heart of the Square Five, is a highly optimised engineered component built to the exact requirements of the Square Series II.

ABR

At the rear of the Square Three cabinet, a unique, high-energy loss diaphragm effectively manages out of phase energy to improve dynamics and perfectly damp the exuberant capabilities of the Tactic Drive Units. Absorbing energy produced by the drive units into a lossy structure and thus reducing the potential for resonance in the loudspeaker cabinet. Placed directly behind the midrange and bass Tactic Drive Unit, the ABRs also enhance the low frequency extension of the drive units much like a port. In a relatively compact design such as the Square Three, one advantage of the ABR, as opposed to a port, is the relative freedom that the ABR gives in terms of rear wall placement since the ABR does not load a nearby facing wall to the same degree that a port would. For owners with limited space in the listening room, this can be an important consideration

HAND CRAFTED FINISHING

Each Square Three, like any Wilson Benesch product has been built by a team of highly trained craftsmen. The cabinet design, like the Tactic drive units at the heart of the Square Series II, is the result of a fastidious attention to detail and engineering excellence. It is the same team of engineers and craftsmen that are responsible for the Cardinal flagship and for this reason you can be sure that the Square Three is a true high end speaker system.

PORT TUBES

The Square Three features two ports in the bottom surface of the cabinet that service the air volume enclosed in the chamber that houses the Tactic bass drive unit. The ports have been optimally tuned to suit the individual characteristics of the drive unit by specification of their length and diameter. The result is an extended bass frequency response.
